Economize Like it’s 1945

“Me travel? Not this summer”, says a cool, contented gentleman in this poster painted by Albert Dorne.

Is this the original “staycation”?

You can save money, a lot of money, by not traveling to a vacation destination, not sleeping in a hotel, not eating in restaurants, not paying for recreation and leisure activities.

Let’s look at the poster. A fan to move the air. A radio for music. A cold drink. Something to read. What more do you need? I’ve taken vacations, traveled to a rented house on a beach, and spent a lot of my time there doing exactly what the man in the poster is doing. I could have done that at home.

If reading (books obtained for free from the library) at home doesn’t appeal to you, there are probably local attractions that you can visit without the expense of a hotel stay or restaurant meals. Don’t be like the proverbial Parisian who has never been to the top of the Eiffel Tower. There’s probably something — a museum, a national park, a historic site — within 50 miles of your home that attracts people from all over. You can visit it as part of your staycation and save the expense of flying half way across the country.

Stay at home. Relax. Enjoy. Save money.
