In the local free newspaper on the way to work a few weeks ago, I noticed a coupon for $5 off any $30 purchase to celebrate the opening of a new Aldi store near me. It wasn’t so near me that I even knew there was an Aldi in that location. But $5 might make it worth the trip. I always keep a quarter in one of the pockets of my wallet — if you’ve ever been to Aldi, you’ll know why. I picked up a few discarded newspapers and soon had 4 coupons. At that point, in effect, I could get $20 off of a $120 purchase, which is a savings of over 16%.
I upped the game a bit more by going to the website of one of the online gift card resellers (the one I used was CardCash) and buying a gift card, which saved me another 7%. Paying for it with one of the credit cards I’m currently churning was worth another 1.5%. All together, it comes out to about 25% off of $120 worth of groceries.
Of course, I did make 4 separate trips to the cash register, getting $30 worth of groceries, paying for it and using a coupon, taking my purchases to my car, and then going back into the store to repeat the process.
Luckily, one of my favorite Aldi products, their canned herring, which I often take for lunch at work, was on sale. Another score!
Love it!
